Filming has begun for "American Treasure - A Smithsonian Journey" underwritten by Wang Laboratories for broadcast on commercial television on Sunday evening, March 23. Gene Kelly, the host-narrator, will take viewers on a personal voyage through America's heritage, achievements and aspirations as represented by the treasures of the Smithsonian museums of art, history, and science.

The Smithsonian is proceeding in negotiations with independent producer Michael Gill to produce ten one-hour television programs in a series tentatively entitled "The Buried Mirror: Images of Latin America." Among Gill's credits are "America" with Alistair Cooke and Lord Kenneth Clark's "Civilization." More recently, Gill completed a four-hour series for the National Gallery of Art on "The Treasure Houses of Britain." In October the Directorate of International Activities sponsored two days of meetings with the writer and narrator of the series, Carlos Fuentes, producers Michael Gill and David Kennard, and historian Peggy Liss. The meetings produced a detailed outline of the scripts for each of the ten programs. The airing of the production in 1989 will be an important part of the Institution's commemoration of the Columbus Quincentennary. Funding for the series will include $3.2 million to be raised by the Smithsonian and $1.2 million in cash or in kind from a United Kingdom television company.
