$4.3 million. IBM has pledged $1 million and has paid an initial increment of $250,000, and the balance of that pledge will be paid when the remaining $3.3 million has been pledged or received. The Secretary has been meeting with CEOs of major computer companies as suggested by John Akers, CEO of IBM. Pledges of $300,000 have been received from Burroughs and Northern Telecom, and other major contributions are expected from AT&T, Dun & Bradstreet, Sperry, MCI, and Hewlett-Packard; many other possibilities are being pursued.

[[underlined]] National Museum of Natural History. [[/underlined]] Approximately $2.8 million is required for a major international traveling exhibition on the anthropology of the Bering Straits being organized with the cooperation of USSR and Canada. Research into corporate prospects is under way.

[[underlined]] Sackler Gallery. [[/underlined]] For the $7 million purchase of the Vever Collection of Persian Art, funds were applied from various sources (Regents' Collection Acquisition Program, Smithsonian General Purpose Funds, Freer Trust Fund resources, and a pledge from Dr. Sackler); it is hoped that an additional $300,000 - $500,000 from outside sources can be found to reimburse the Institution's unrestricted trust funds.

[[underlined]] Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. [[/underlined]] For a major exchange with Russia, with an exhibition of Russian Itinerant painters to coming to the United States and a comparable exhibition of American 19th century painters traveling to Russia, approximately $527,000 is required. Pepsico has recently pledged $300,000, and there are approaches outstanding to Ralston-Purina, Avon Products, and Archer-Daniels-Midland.
