STAGE DIRECTIONS
FROM THE LEAGUE
BY BEN PESNER

STANDING ROOM ONLY in Times Square

HOW DO YOU DEFINE A CAPACITY CROWD? In Times Square it's more than 50,000 fans standing shoulder-to-shoulder to celebrate the beginning of the 2001-2002 theatrical season. Next month, they'll take to the streets for Broadway on Broadway* presented by Toys "R" Us with Continental Airlines, a free, open-air concert that features Broadway celebrities on a giant outdoor stage—and will be broadcast the following evening on NBC4 New York.
Now in its 10th year, Broadway on Broadway is one of the most popular events on the Big Apple's cultural calendar. The concert brings together more than 200 performers and a 30-piece orchestra to turn the Crossroads of the World into a giant outdoor concert hall.
What's on the program? A free sample of musical numbers from the shows that make Broadway theatre New York City's single largest tourist attraction, along with a sneak preview of this fall's new plays and musicals. This year's concert is set for noon on Sunday, September 9. NBC4 will bring the event to the airwaves for the second time, this year on Monday September 10 at 7:00 P.M. Other NBC stations hroughout the U.S. will carry the concert as well. Check your local listings.
Besides being the official kickoff of the theatrical season, Broadway on Broadway also helps spotlight Times Square as the city's most exciting family-friendly entertainment destination.
Brroadway on Broadway is co-produced by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the Times Square Business Improvement District. The event is presented by Toys "R" Us with Continental Airlines, and with additional support from The New York Times, Music Performance Trust Funds and Theatre Development Fund.

TAKE THE BROADWAY ON BROADWAY RUN! Continental Airlines and the New York Road Runners Club invite you to celebrate Broadway's shortest run—only 5 kilometers—at the second annual Continental Airlines Broadway on Broadway Run, a fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The course begins in Central Park and finishes in Times Square near the Broadway on Broadway stage. Dress up as your favorite Broadway character for a chance to win free tickets to a Broadway show and travel certificates from Continental (there will also be prizes for the quickest finish). The awards ceremony takes place on the concert stage. For registration information, call The Broadway Line (see below).
