JOHN RUSSELL (Bob Cratchit/ Deacon) trained at Juilliard and won the first International Lauritz Melchior Helden Tenor Award.  He made his Broadway debut and toured as Harry the Horse in the recent revival of Guys and Dolls.  His first stage role was the Celebrant in Leonard Bernstein's Mass and his first operatic role was as Verdi's Otello.  Mr. Russell has been a soloist with numerous symphony orchestras, and has appeared in the films Death Wish, Pelham 1-2-3, Dog Day Afternoon, Marathon Man and The Black Spy, among others, and in many a TV drama.

LORETTA DEVINE (Young Mary) a native of Houston, Texas, was featured as Dionne in Tom O'Horgan's revival of Hair and was also seen on Broadway in Gower Champion's A Broadway Musical.  Ms. Devine received her B.A. in theatre at the University of Houston and her M.F.A. at Brandeis University.  She has been seen in over 15 Off-Broadway shows, such as Mahalia Godsong, Karma, Miss Truth and The Blacks.  Ms. Devine can presently be heard on Stanley Cowell's album Talkin' About Love.  (Special thanks to Obaka and kisses to my mother, Eunice Devine).

VIRGINIA MCKINZIE (Mrs. Cratchit/ Deacon's Wife) is making her Broadway debut in Comin' Uptown. She started singing in church choirs back home in Alabama and has been a member of New York's famous Abyssinian Baptist Church choir. A Registered Nurse with a Master of Arts degree from N.Y.U., she has often portrayed a nurse in innumerable TV soap operas, dramatic series and commercials. She has also acted in a great many films, Off Broadway and in regional theatre.

ESTHER MARROW (Gospel Singer) was featured on Broadway as Aunt Em in The Wiz.  She played a leading role in the Chicago company of Dont Bother Me, I Cant Cope and portrayed the immortal Mahalia Jackson at the Henry Street Playhouse.  Ms. Marrow has been acclaimed internationally for her concerts with Harry Belafonte and the late Duke Ellington.  She is a nightclub favorite in this country and Europe, and has given a command performance in London at the request of the Royal Family.  Her singing has been ranked by Downbeat magazine with that of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Aretha Franklin.

CAROL LYNN MAILLARD (Martha Cratchit) is from Philadelphia and her credits include six years in Washington with the D.C. Black Repertory Company as an actress and vocal instructor.  Since coming to New York she has performed on Broadway in Eubie! and Off Broadway in It's So Nice To Be Civilized, Puttin' On The Mask, A Photograph, Seasons Reasons and The Great MacDaddy.  She performed in For Colored Girls ... at the Adelaide Festival in Australia and later in Los Angeles.  As a singer she has worked with such groups as Sweet Honey in the Rock, Horace Silver's Music of the Spheres and Works in Progress.

PHILIP ROSE (Director/Co-Author) made his Broadway debut as a theatrical producer with A Raisin in the Sun, which won the Drama Critics' Award as the Best Play of the Year.  He also co-produced the film version.  He has since been involved as producer and/or director in many Broadway productions including Nobody Loves an Albatross, Purlie Victorious, The Owl and the Pussycat, Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?, Purlie, Shenandoah, The Trip
