where the ladies kick and claw for the bargains. A smash. A sellout. I watched two chic girls quit being friends, furiously, over the last little coat in size 8.
Why the excitement? Possibly because Anne Klein clothes are zippy, young, wearable and way ahead in a non-faddy kind of styling that stays in style. Also, they are high quality at - by today's standards - medium prices. And, bliss: where they are supposed to fit, they do.
The basic and peachy idea behind The Room is to have, all in one place, the separate parts of a complete day-to-night wardrobe. Interrelated pieces that assemble themselves into perfect little outfits. (This even takes in shoes, belts, scarves.) Every few months a new group of pieces will be added, designed to intermarry happily with some you already own. It is a marvelous idea in itself.
Besides, in subtle, semiclassic simplicity, Anne Klein's taste is equal, I think, to Chanel's - even fresher, more contemporary and with a wider range of appeal. Yes, you can consider this a rave notice. I admire anything that's best of its kind.
Starting prices: for dresses, $70; suits, coats, $125; separate blouses, skirts, pants, vests, sweaters, jackets and her wonderfully effortless evening pieces, start at $25, with $70 a more likely average.
Somewhere in my folder is a list of stores through the country where there are or will be Anne Klein Rooms. If it matters to you, write to me at Playbill, 579 Fifth Avenue, NYC 10017.

New houses spring up along Seventh Avenue every minute. Many are gone, the next. The newest and one that should survive flourishingly in the ready-to-wear jungle is the Rodrigues for Milbo Collections. Rodrigues used to work for Geoffrey Beene, a neat reference in itself.
His clothes have snap. He uses two techniques: staccato color combinations cut in clean, lean shapes; and, a softer

look, but with jazz added.
One I wanted, in red and white Paisley, was his sexy little resort-or anywhere-shirtdress with the kimono sleeves and what he calls "an optional décolletage." Just keep on unbuttoning and you eventually plunge, ready for anything. There are soft gathers above and below the high-waisted inset band. There are even pockets sneaked into the side seams, and I give

any designer an A for recognizing this little luxury of life.
Re: quality, my personal hang-up. Not every well-made showroom sample looks as great as when it finally hits the store racks. But Milbo is out to prove quality in design, cut, fabric, detail. So I'll bet a buck that the store-bought version of this dress won't make me sorry I carried on so about it. See for yourself, at Saks Fifth Avenue, fifth floor, $100.
