THRIFT WEEK

Thrift Week in Kansas City will be observed from March 21 to 28. The Urban League is sponsoring the movement. F. T. Lane, wide awake secretary that he is, brought the business men together and arranged a program. The program includes speakers for the week for schools, club meetings and church services. The ministers will either preach sermons on Sunday bearing on thrift or give prominence in their sermons to it. Prizes will be given to the grade school originating the best slogan on thrift.

CHURCH ARCHITECT SPENDS DAY IN KANSAS CITY

J. E. Jansson spent a day in Kansas City viewing the site recently purchased by Centennial Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Jansson represents the Sunday School Board of the General Church and belongs to the architectural staff. He will draw the preliminary plans of the new church and educational building, which Centennial is now preparing to erect. The proposed plant will embrace the latest in appointments and will be planned to meet the modern day community needs. The site is a commanding one situated on the Paseo, one of Kansas City's principle drives and on an elevation which can be seen from many angles. Under the leadership of its pastor, Dr. M. L. Mackay, the congregation is forming itself into an organization to campaign for funds.

NEW FIRMS IN KANSAS CITY

Among the new businesses opening in Kansas City is the E. and W. Pharmacy, 18th and Vine street. J. W. Elliot and J. R. Wilson are the proprietors. The Williams Studio at 1810 Vine is a well equipped shop and from the looks of its display is able to deliver the goods. Mrs. Clara Lyden Stokes has opened a Ready-to-Wear Garment and Millinery on Vine street near 19th

"ROBERT KING, AMATEUR DETECTIVE"

"Bob look! What is that over yonder?" exclaimed Alice at the same time pointing to a light in the distance. Bob turned quickly.
"What?"
"It was there just now....there it is, see? It must be a house," she cried joyfully.
"And lighted from top to bottom," he added.
"Let's go over there and ask them to let us spend the night there," she suggested.
"All right, if you wish it."
They walked arm in arm up to the mysterious house. There were no flowers in the yard, grass was growing but by the light of the moon, they could tell that weeds were almost as evenly distributed as the grass throughout the yard. The house itself did not look any more inviting; it was somewhat old and dilapidated. A gentle breeze whistled mournfully through the leaves; although every light in the house was turned on, it seemed rather quiet.
"It's probably some rich persons country home in charge of caretakers but I wonder why they have all the lights on," Bob said rather puzzled.
They must be fixing the house for its owners." They walked up to the door and rang the bell; no one answered it so Bob walked to one of the windows and was peering in when Alice uttered a startled exclamation. He turned just in time to see her entering the massive door which was slowly opening on rusty hinges with a loud screech. Bob ran to catch her but no sooner had he entered the hall than the door slammed shut.
The hall was large, with a carpet covering the entire floor, a hall tree and a chair were its only pieces of furniture which were in good condition but de-
