Once in a while, an old legend comes true in the theatre; a young unknown from nowhere in particular comes to Broadway and gets a real "break" overnight. The current case in point is SHEILA GUYS (Lily). She first sang professionally in a small California nitery. Her next booking was as singer with Joe Turner's band. On its conclusion, she returned to Kansas City, where she had become a favorite, for an engagement on her own. But the curfew law was passed, and her job evaporated. She took a train to New York and got an audition with John Wildberg and Vinton Freedley, then casing "Memphis Bound." Her good looks and melting voice immediately won her a part in this musical.

IDA JAMES (Penny) is another recruit to the theatre from bands and night clubs. When she was sixteen, she was the leading feminine singer for Erskine Hawkins' orchestra, remaining with that outfit for three years. She was featured in the film, "Meet the People," and returned to New York to appear in "Laffing Room Only." Her most recent night club engagement was at Cafe Society Downtown.

THELMA CARPENTER (Henny) made her debut at an "amateur night" performance in the Apollo Theatre, Harlem. As a result, she was engaged for a night club revue. Subsequently, she sang with the bands of Teddy Wilson and Coleman Hawkins, and then was featured with Count Basie's orchestra. She has also been heard on the air and on recordings. A few months ago, she became a headliner at Le Ruben Bleu.
