It's been done before . . . . there are a few simple set rules to steer one's course to the top of the ladder. There is plenty room at the top.

During the past five years there has been only five acts among sepias which have time after time been headliners. By that we mean they have received equal or greater billing than other acts on the program, regardless of color.

They are Ethel Waters, Bill Robinson, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and the Mills Brothers.

Paul Robeson who can get billing equal to anyone has not consistently appeared in America.

But they only applied a few simple rules to get to the top in their profession.

Perseverance, thrift and industry are the three magic words. One has to be on the alert for new ideas. Work hard and spend your money to the best possible advantage.

Let's go into details. One must first have ability, then the ambition to get ahead.

You see the world, in truth, really recognizes two things: success and failure. It doesn't matter how you get to the top . . . as long as you are there. Your hardships, sins, everything is forgotten. Your sins are forgiven if you have money . . . or are successful.

We all know the story told about the husband who slips out with the boys and gambles with the weekly pay check. If he loses the check, he's a dirty so and so, but if he should triple his pay check all is forgiven. He is a darling etc. The sin of gambling with the family treasure is forgiven. Papa has dough. That is how life is. Success or failure.

One of the things which spell success to the averege performer is publicity. Few sepias realize the importance of publicity as one of the most essential factors to one's success in the theatrical profession.

Few people in America have seen Josephine Baker. If she should appear in your city, they would have to call out the police reserves to hold the mobs in checks. Her success is based upon one thing. . .publicity. It has been publicity which has created a desire in the minds of everyone to see this woman. Another Jo Baker knows how to get it.

So there is plenty of room at the top. Remember the magic words and you'll know what to do, do it. "It's been done before" EARL J. MORRIS
