ABOUT PHILADELPHIA

[[box]] "PHILLIE AFTER SUNDOWN"
By GEORGE THOMPSON [[/box]]

Yes, old Phillie is really supporting the two sepia playhouses, while both are trying to give us the best in shows...we certainly and sincerely hope this break for performers will be lasting...The gathering of our own and and the influx of the out-of-town performers, reminds you of the good old days in Harlem. It's good to see the old faces, and the new ones too...Ford, Marshall and Jones left here to be featured with Don Redman and his orchestra at the Loew's State in New York...boys, I am anxiously awaiting that surprise up on your toes, get it.

Dropping in on our night clubs, I find Charlie Gaines blazing away at the Parrish Cafe, uptown, supported by Mother Crush...Irene Baptiste and her girls...The Harlem Club, downtown, Ted Tinsley and his band really keep things stepping here. Here we see George Kraft, Pee Wee Gillette, Bebe Hawkins, Dot Bell, Francis Alexander and a beautiful chorus. Around the corner at the Moon Light, is the boy who really made good here in Phillie as m. c., Clarence Ellis, the show here makes you forget your troubles. Bobby Johns still holds her end in the chorus.

Charlie Johnson, back from the Club Harlem, Atlantic City, is entering what nitery? New faces that came to town, leaving the folks agog: Louise McCarroll, singing with Don Redman...pardon my slang, but this girl really slays songs. Dot Tinney, that fast little stepper, we hear, is making a wise move by doing a single. Velma Middleton, Ada Brown and Ella Fitzgerald singing into the hearts of the most exact critics here. Recently appearing at the Lincoln were Butter beans and Susie, attentive bookings for the Broad Street House are Claude Hopkins and Louis Armstrong.

Marguerite Wilkins, late of Chicago, is doing good. Would like to have been able to tell you all about the Battle of Music, held at the Nixon-Grand between Tom Dorsey and the Sunset Entertainers Orchestras. Advance booking for this house are Andy Kirk and Red Nichols orchestras. Will that party, who left me an Oklahoma eagle, please enlighten me? I am sorry to say this, but we need an up-to-date club in this town...yes, we have clubs and clubs, but the former is sorely needed, its not because we can't support one, why, well your answer is good as mine.

Chink Collins and the Cotton Club boys are fast becoming Phillie's favorites. The Post Card on South St. is really the town's most popular gathering place...the doors are always open to you. One of our favorite
