The new coat crop is mostly short and casual, the kind of loose, collarless coats that you toss over every dress and suit in your wardrobe. Fashion leader of them all is the mandarin coat, named for its knee length, straight lines and flared sleeves. It has a Chinese collar or none at all and side-slits. Carrying out the mandarin idea, some have silky black "frog" fastenings or a band of black braid that outlines the neck and front.

"Dog collars", a revival of Edwardian elegance, are the hit of the year. They're done in pearls - two or three strands - or in "jewelled" effects worn tightly about the throat. Others are velvet ribbon with a decorative bow, pin or clip in front.
