IT CONCERNS US
By the Observer

SAYING NO.

We had the occasion to call on several business men within the last few weeks, in an attempt to sell an idea. This idea was not a new one but has been tried in different variation time and time again, and it has failed many times. But it has made many men rich or famous.

We did not expect to sell every one, but had hoped to be given a chance to explain how it worked. Many would not even listen. So here are some facts we found out about the Negro in business.

He does not know how to say No. If a proposition is put to him that isn't to his liking, instead of saying no, he says "My partner takes care of that, and he isn't here." "When will he be in?" "Well, you see, he's just in and out all the time." After one has returned to see this partner four or five times, they are told that the partner is out of town and will not return for two or three weeks. This is all so uncalled for. We believe the people most likely to succeed, are people who are able to meet an issue squarely, and are able to make split-second decisions.

'The Negro in business who has a pleasing personality is very conspicuous by his absence. When he IS able to say No, he says it in such a way that had one ever been a customer of that place, they would not want to go in there again. May we mention in passing that we came upon three places where the personality of both executive and employees were charming. They were the Ostende Food Shop, where we met a plump little waitress with personality plus; also one of the managers. At Wade's and at Gates' there was plenty of it.

We should learn how to be able to keep our word, make a decision and how to say NO.
