Ques. by Def.  What did he whip you for?

Ans.  I don't know what he whipped me for.

Ques. by Court.  Why was it you swore Mr. R. was whipping you because you did not agree to the indenture, and now don't know why?

Ans.  He commenced whipping me and got me into the shed, then asked me would I stay with him, until I was twenty one, and he would give me two suits of clothes, one hundred dollars and make a man of me.

Ques. by Def.  When Mr. R. remarked as before, did he tell you he would whip you until you would stay with him?

Ans.  When he whipped me awhile, he stopped and asked me these questions. I would answer, I did not know I had done anything wrong or misbehaved to deserve whipping.

Ques. by Def.  Did he whip you to make you stay with him?

Ans.  He whipped awhile then quit: and asked these questions - whipped and asked again. If I whip that stand before me (laying his hand on the stand) and told it to speak and it did not, and then I whipped again, and repeated the questions, would it look like I wanted it to speak?
