The witness' appearance before the Court, his manly, frank statement and apparent honesty, together with the cross-examination must have struck every one favorably and certainly impressed us that he was telling the truth.

The evidence that Dan made threats and used a curry comb [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] is from at least a partially interested party and does not naturally agree with the whole evidence.  Moreover the same witness confirms much of Dan's [[strikethrough]] cho [[/strikethrough]] statement and proves fully that he was a valuable, trustworthy hand, as good as any one wanted, that he did his work faithfully & well and yet was whipped because he was stubborn and bad!

As to Ben Simpsons evidence, it matters little whether it is taken or not.  He confirms Dan's statement generally and certainly appeared better as a witness than Mathew Baldwin (Colored).

Mathew Baldwin's testimony was peculiar.  His replies to the questions were instant & formal.  His testimony bore all the legal "ear marks" of a prepared paper.  It struck everyone who heard it as being a matter of course.  That witness ruined his credibility by his manner and the peculiar character of the rapid questions & replies as they were given [[underlined]] Seriation. [[/underlined]]  I could not believe him.  And this was increased when upon his Cross Ex. (the test of truth) he knew nothing else.  That mans knowledge is within a fixed [[strikethrough]] spere [[/strikethrough]] sphere.
