Cotton was arrested by Police Officers Confined in the county jail and afterwards turned over to Mr Thomas Song a magistrate appointed by Gov Holden. He ordered the jailor Mr Jno T Mallory as follows "Give him 10 lashes at 10 oclock 20 lashes at 12 oclock 9 lashes at 2 oclock well laid on —" In the interval he shall wear a barrel on his head and at the expiration of all he shall be tied up by the thumbs his toes touching the ground for two hours This punishment must all be carried out at the whipping Post
