Wm. F. Henderson Asst. Supt. Freedmen's Bureau

Dear Sir,

On yesterday I was handed your note of the 23rd, to appear at your office on Saturday the 26th inst to answer the complaint of Orange & others formally the slaves of yourself Specifications are for non payment of labour & the command is "bring forward your evidence in the case"

In December last I made full settlement at the Principal Bureau at Salisbury, with Col: Cilley for all the labor of those who had been my servants - and these settlements are a part of the Archives of the Bureau there, over which I have no control.

If it is your purpose & act again upon the acts of your superior, then I must prepare for it.

These servants have been again & again to see Col: Cilley. I have had their answers, but no summons from Col: Cilley has ever come to hand_ The man Orange has sworn to give me all the trouble he can, he has been to Greensboro, Danville & Raleigh & now he is working upon you _ My settlements were made with Col: Cilley, two months before he appointed you to office & if you are not satisfied with decisions, please inform him thereof-

respectfully,
