I had no control over the negroes agants ther will (large or small)  Nearly all of the meal and all meal for the mules was the product of the mill from tolls. Bough five or six four horse loads of hay and a large quantity of straw was bought. These hands went to work when they pretended to work at all at ^[[insertion]] times varying from [[/insertion]] a half hour by sun until ten oclock, and then as a general thing worked very sorry. some few worked very well after getting to the field. The negroes returned from work at sunset after having had an orderny noon [[?]] of it. Shop Peter worked very well after he was hirred  before he was hirred he worked very well when he came to work but he left and worked for others when he pleased he was hirred in August the 22nd

Orange worked very well when he would go ^[[insertion]] to [[/insertion]] the field, he worked very irregularly I had more dependence in him than any other of my field hands. He worked ^[[insertion]] out [[/insertion]] in oats harvest and frequently went to Lexington and was often gone,
