Cross examined
Testifies as follows, the rule of the bureau last year was to require the negroes to remain with their former owners and the owners to retain their former slaves until the end of the year. When the negroes came to enquire whither they should remain, and how they would be paid, they were sent back to their former owners, and told them that they would get their pay if they worked and behaved themselves.

Redirect) He advised them to go back, work well, and behave themselves and they would get their pay. We made the rule that the negroes should have one fifth of the corn, oats and hay.
