I know G. W. Meyers the witness sworn yesterday, I have known him for about twelve months. I know his character since he has been in my neighborhood, his character is good.

Cross examined
The corn crop last year in the Jersey settlement was pretty fair for the amount planted. Doct Holt the defendant has very good land. The negroes in the Jersey settlement last year generally did not work as usual. my [[strikethrough]]] observation [[/strikethrough]] opinion is that Docts Holts negroes worked last year as well as other peoples negroes in the neighborhood, as far as I saw. I saw them at work frequently in his field near my house. Doct Holts negroes attended his mill. I think that Doct Holt raised but small cotton crops during the war. It is frequently the case on large plantations of negroes that the care of the little negroes and children is entrusted to the old worn out hands while the able negroes are working during the day.
