and Federal cavalry that he had not enough provisions to keep them, and the second reason was, that the negroes themselves were so demoralized that they were doing him no good. he offered to give them $100.00 in gold all he had to be relived of them. he was told that the government would require him to keep them and feed them, old and young until the 1st of January, when he could make contracts with them or not just as he saw fit, and my understanding at the time was, that this was all that would be required of him.
