[[underlined]] MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 28, 1987 [[/underlined]]

It was noted that Dr. Gell-Mann had suggested revisions in the draft Minutes of September 28, 1987, to clarify the representation of his remarks with respect to the National Museum of Natural History. The text below (excerpted from page 23 of the September 28 Minutes) indicates revised wording proposed to be incorporated into the Minutes which were pending the Regents' approval. The following motion was adopted:

VOTED that the Board of Regents approves the Minutes of the meeting of September 28, 1987, as previously circulated on October 29, 1987, and as revised.

Dr. Gell-Mann mentioned that in view of the prominence of the National Museum of Natural History in the following and two subsequent reports he wanted to express his support for the further development of the programs there in biological diversity and molecular systematics. [[underlined]] But he was particularly concerned about the Museum's ability to enhance its position of leadership in the various fields of systematic biology and to attract more excellent scientists. He hoped that the hiring of the respected Dr. Hoffman, first as the Director of the Museum and now as the Assistant Secretary for Research, would signal a resurgence of the whole enterprise. [[/underlined]] The Secretary shared Dr. Gell-Mann's concerns as they relate to both research productivity and exhibitions, and he suggested that Dr. Hoffmann, who will be attending his first meeting with the Board of Regents this winter, be invited to give a brief report on the status of the Museum at that time.
