Washington, D.D. 20560 Dear Mr. Adams: I am writing to let you know of Maryland's interest in the proposed expansion of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. I understand that your current facility located in Silver Hill, Maryland has inadequate storage for all of your properties. In addition, I know you have many exhibits that cannot be displayed at the Mall facility due to space limitations. I understand that for these reasons the Institution is interested in developing an off-Mall facility for the museum and that the Baltimore-Washington International Airport may meet the basic criteria for such a museum facility. Maryland is in the process of determining if we can devise a proposal of mutual benefit to the Smithsonian in establishing this new facility. Toward that end, we have already undertaken a physical feasibility study at the site. Preliminary indications are that there is suitable land at the airport that would provide the necessary space and runway access for the museum complex. Moreover, the state is now beginning an economic feasibility study to determine how best we could assist the Smithsonian in establishing this facility. In addition to the physical attributes of the BWI site, Maryland offers many institutions that could productively work with the Smithsonian on research and educational initiatives related to the museum's mandate, such as the Goddard Space Flight Center, the Applied Physics Lab at John Hopkins University , and the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore.
