[[underlined]] Direct Recruitment [[/underlined]]

The key to direct recruitment programs is the probability that the successful participant will be offered either a civil service or trust fund position at the completion of the program. Although the Institution's direct recruitment programs are not restricted to minorities and women, there is a strong emphasis on placing persons from these groups in the programs.

Cooperative Education Program

Participation in the program is low because of the difficulty in identifying students who are appropriate for the program. This year one new appointment was made at the NMNH and another at NMAH. Two former co-op students are employed as an electrical engineering technician, and a publication coordinator.

Education Fellowship Program

Two minority males participated in the program. One Anthropology student completed his first year of graduate school and spent part of the summer conducting research at the NMNH and the remainder on an archaeological dig in Florida. He is continuing his graduate program this year. The second student completed his Ph.D. in Astronomy and has accepted a temporary position at the SAO.

Federal Junior Fellowship Program

One White woman was offered a civil service position which she declined. No new participants were added to the program, bringing the total down to six participants out of twenty available slots. Four Black women and two white men were employed as aides in accounting, conservation information, engineering, computers, technical information and museums.
