Faculty Fellowship Program

Although there have been fewer applications to this program over the past two years, the decrease has been offset by a greater number of applications and placements in the Minority Intern Program. In attempting to determine the reasons for this decline, the OFG has contacted other funding institutions such as the National Endowment for the Humanities which has experienced similar declines in programs aimed at minority scholars. Reasons for the decline are still not known. Figure B-3 indicates participation in this program over the last three years.

Minority Internship Program

Since the establishment of the program, approximately 150 appointments have been supported in virtually every bureau of the Institution. The number of applications to and placements in this program continue to grow and participation has diversified in terms of minority groups, as well as geographic representation. In fiscal year 1987, many more individuals from the West Coast and Southwest applied and were accepted. Figure B-4 indicates the trend of the program and the minority breakdown over the past three fiscal years.
