American students to come to the Institution and participate in ongoing research or museum activities related to Native American subjects and resources. In addition, visits for community scholars, who are formally or informally affiliated with Native American organizations, are available to come to the Smithsonian to utilize its Native American resources. Seven awards were offered in fiscal year 1987.

Native American Museums Program

Since its inception, the program has conducted or cosponsored nineteen workshops for five hundred and fifty participants, and directed sixty-five internships and residencies of two-to-twelve weeks in duration. In fiscal year 1987, technical assistance was provided to over one hundred tribal groups. The ongoing services include the annual newsletter, career counseling and advice about planning and organizing a museum.

Smithsonian - Howard University Internship Program

As part of the program, eight students and two faculty members visited the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for ten days. There they conducted planned field exercises, did individual projects and were shown ongoing research of staff and visiting scientists. Upon their return, they all presented short talks to some SI staff on the research they conducted at STRI and their general impressions of the course. Two of the students received internships for the summer; one at the NMNH and the other at SERC.
