Special Education Program

Among the more notable accomplishments and ongoing services were:

• Publication of the docent training package;

• Completion of the prototype on a museum orientation kit for people with mental retardation;

• Sign interpreters for approximately 550 hearing-impaired persons for a variety of programs and special events;

• Production and distribution of audiocassette versions of the Calendar of Events to 25 visually-impaired individuals monthly;

• Training sessions on Accessibility for disabled visitors for three bureaus;

• Beginning Conversational Sign Language classes for staff and volunteers; and

• Consultation on exhibition design and physical accessibility.

Physical Accessibility for Disabled Persons

Projects and initiatives that improved physical accessibility for disabled persons were:

• Hirshhorn Museum -- Included as part of the raceway system for computers was the upgrading of the sidewalk on Jefferson Drive resurfacing and additional curb cuts.

• South Quadrangle Building -- opened this fiscal year. This new building houses the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, and the National Museum of African Art as well as the National and Resident Associates offices, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, and the International Center and includes accessible facilities for handicapped visitors.
