Women's Program

Activities and initiatives included:

• working with the National Association of Women in Science and Engineering to administer and maintain a network for notifying female scientists and engineers of job opportunities at the Institution;

• providing career counseling and career development information to applicants for employment and to employees, predominantly women;

• meeting with organization unit heads to assess the status of women in their units, discussing opportunities for career advancement of women and encouraging supervisory involvement in the employment, training and advancement of women; and 

• placing recruitment advertisements in publications that reach women.

Smithsonian Institution Women's Council

Among the notable accomplishments were:

• sponsorship of a seminar and workshop on street harassment;

• founding of a Washington, D. C. network for women in museums; 

• hiring of consultants to pursue establishing a child care center for Smithsonian employees;

• creating an SIWC brochure for distribution to new employees; and 

• redesigning the [[underlined]] Four Star [[/underlined]] newsletter.
