The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the Smithsonian National Associates, the Smithsonian's education offices and various other organization units continue to involve minority and women's organizations in outreach activities. Examples included: distribution of "VIP" packets containing information concerning Smithsonian events in their areas to presidents of Historically Black Colleges, grants, loans of exhibitions to minority institutions and organizations, and special presentations to predominately minority or female schools and organizations.

Ethnic Awareness Programs

Over the past several years, the celebration of commemorative periods has become more extensive and varied. Fiscal year 1987 Black History Month featured the Honorable Shirley Chishlom, and the opening of the Field to Factory Exhibition in the National Museum of American History. Other events included scholarly events, vocal and instrumental concerts, dance performances, films, lectures and a poetry reading.

The featured speaker for the Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week was the Honorable Norman Y. Mineta. Other events included vocal and instrumental concerts, films, craft demonstrations, and a lecture.

The featured event for Hispanic Heritage Week was the Ponce Puerto Rico Children's Chorus with speakers Luis Nunez, President of the National Puerto Rican Coalition, Inc., and Marta Istomin, Artistic Director of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Other activities included lectures, films, tours and a concert.
