Smithsonian Institution Women's Council

The Smithsonian Institution Women's Council (SIWC) is an advisory group established by the Secretary in 1972. Composed of twenty members elected biannually from the Institution at large, the SIWC provides advice and recommendations to Smithsonian management regarding issues which affect all employees, particularly women.

Upward Mobility Program

The Upward Mobility Program is an education program designed to provide employees with academic, technical and vocational training to enhance their career mobility, and to assist management in obtaining staffing goals. 

Outreach Program

The OEO's Outreach Program disseminates a  variety of information to minority, women's, and disabled person's groups and organizations to increase their awareness of and participation in programs, activities and exhibitions.  These goals are met through exhibitions at conferences and job fairs, outreach messages in women's or minority publications, and special projects with predominantly minority and women's colleges, universities and organizations.

Ethnic Awareness Program

Program staff provide guidance and support to managers, supervisors and employees on the recruitment, hiring, training, career development, and special concerns of Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, and other ethnic groups. In addition, OEO coordinates ethnic awareness programs by sponsoring varied events during such commemorative periods as Black History Month (February),
