Native American Awards Program

The Native American Awards Program grants awards to Native Americans to pursue research or internship projects in residence at the Institution in association with research and professional staff. Begun in fiscal year 1985, the awards are designed to promote access to the collections, resources, and expertise by Native American students and scholars who are pursuing research related to Native American studies.

Smithsonian - Howard University Internship Program

In fiscal year 1985, with support from an Education Outreach Grant, OFG and Howard University Departments of Botany and Zoology developed a course for undergraduates designed to increase minority interest and participation in natural history.

Visiting Associates Program 

Designed to bring university faculty and administrators with a commitment to expanding minority participation in higher education to the Smithsonian to learn about its research activities and opportunities for research and study, the Visiting Associates Program was founded in 1985 with a grant from the Education Outreach Program. Objectives of the program are to develop a networking system which will help to expand the effectiveness of the programs operated by OFG and to increase the representation and participation of minorities in research, study and employment opportunities.
