Career Awareness Program

Designed to introduce minority and other high school students to museum careers and role models, the Career Awareness Program (CAP) is operated in collaboration with the D.C. Public High Schools. Selected students receive first, an overview, and later, a more in-depth experience of a variety of museum professions while developing skills used in career planning. Included in the museum experience are behind-the-scenes tours, lectures and workshops, and on-the-job training in supervised work placements.

Special Education Program

The Special Education Program develops programs and program materials designed for disabled students. Program staff provide training to teachers of disabled students on how to use exhibits and programs to enhance other teaching activities, and consult with museum education personnel regarding specific programming for disabled students and visitors.

THE OFFICE OF THE COMMITTEE FOR A WIDER AUDIENCE

The Committee for a Wider Audience was established in 1983, and in 1986, the Office of the Committee for a Wider Audience (OCWA) was created. The OCWA recommends and furthers Institution-wide objectives to increase minority community participation in all aspects of the Institution's activities.

THE SMITHSONIAN CULTURAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE

The Secretary founded the multicultural, multiracial Smithsonian Cultural Education Committee in 1987 to assist senior management in broadening outreach through more varied cultural programming, networking and representation in exhibitions.
