-69- NOTES TO TABLE 1. Escalation at 4% per annum. 2. Escalated to construction midpoint of August, 1991. Assumes beneficial occupancy in October, 1993 and public opening in October, 1994. 3. Includes an additional 50,000 square feet (S.1722 requires 400,000 square feet; Smithsonian estimate had been based on 350,000). 4. Smithsonian testimony included $4.5 million for relocation and processing of Heye Foundation collection. S.1722 requirement to transfer Native American collection of the National Museum of Natural History (4 million objects, artifacts, specimens, and records), which is about four times greater than the Heye collection, is conservatively estimated to cost $9 million for identification, packing, loading, transporting, unloading, unpacking, and storage or preparation for exhibition. Other costs are for initial exhibitions and the move of staff into the building. An additional $1 million has been included for public programs associated with the 50,000 extra square feet. 5. An increment of $1.8 million has been added because of additional square feet. 6. Smithsonian testimony did not include $1.1 million in base building services costs. The cost of building operations in the extra 50,000 square feet foot will require an estimated $740,000 in addition to other amounts. 7. Temporary transfer required by S.1722 will require an estimated $5 million for identification, $3 million for packing, and $2 million for transportation and storage equipment. 8. Task Force support includes travel and related expenses, secretarial and technical personnel, and reproduction services. 9. Assumes construction of seven regional centers at approximately $7.6 million each (land acquisition costs estimated at $1 million per site and construction costs at $6.6 million per site, including furnishings and equipment). Buildings of 37,500 gross square feet each would provide about 30,000 net useable square feet that allows 15,000 square feet for exhibitions and other public space, which is approximately equivalent to the Evans Gallery in the National Museum of Natural History. Other spaces are 7,000 square feet for storage and set-up, 5,000 square feet for support activities (training rooms, library, entrance area, and visitor services), and 3,000 square feet of administrative office space. Square foot cost estimate is $175.
