1 | people and their traditions which shall be known as the
2 | "National Museum of the American Indian" (hereafter re-
3 | ferred to in the Act as the "Museum") which shall provide
4 | for-
5 | (1) the advancement of the study of the Native
6 | peoples of the Americas and the study of their lan-
7 | guage, literature, history, art, and life;
8 | (2) for the collection, preservation, and exhibi-
9 | tion of objects of artistic, historic, literary, and sci-
10 | entific interest related thereto; and
11 | (3) programs of research and study.
12 | (b) The area bounded by Third Street, Maryland
13 | Avenue, Independence Avenue, Fourth Street, and Jeffer-
14 | son Drive, in the District of Columbia, is hereby appropri-
15 | ated to the Smithsonian Institution as the permanent site of
16 | the Museum.
17 | (c) The Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institu-
18 | tion is authorized to-
19 | (1) prepare architectural and engineering de-
20 | signs, plans, and specifications, and to construct at
21 | the site specified in subsection (b) of this section a
22 | building at least 400,000 square feet in size to house
23 | the Museum;
24 | (2) accept, borrow, or otherwise provide for the 
25 | temporary acquisition of Native American objects
