Prof. Spencer F. Baird
Director U.S. National Museum

Sir;

I beg leave to offer the enclosed report of work done in the department of fishes during the month of January. My own time has been occupied, principally, in identifying the collections received, describing some of the species, criticising drawings of fishes, recording & examining papers [[strikethrough]] papers [[/strikethrough]] intended for publication, assisting in the rearrangement of the specimens in the tank room, and in the general care of the fishes in the museum.

The work of rearrangement and the administration upon collections newly received is still greatly retarded by the want of storage jars and exhibition bottles.

Very respectfully yours,

Curator, Department of Fishes.
