Look at it this way:
When the curtain goes down tonight,
you'll have to pay $6.25
to claim your car from the garage,
and another $9.50
to claim your child from the baby-sitter.
And you're still drinking ordinary scotch?

Broadway or Bust...
by Frank Giordano

I have now earned a fairly good living as an actor in New York since 1961 and as yet have not made it to Broadway. (My only pre-Broadway try-out was so bad that the critics said we should have opened it at Yucca Flats). Broadway, however, is only one place for a New York actor to earn a living practicing his craft. The following are some of the other performing opportunities I and my fellow thespians tapped this year to make ends meet:

DINNER THEATRES...I did 3 weeks of a Neil Simon play last fall. It is the only theatrical experience where groupies wait at the stage door for a chance to "make it" with the chef.

FILMS...I have as yet to appear in a major movie production. The only movie I did was a low budgeted X rated number made on location in Tijuana where a donkey got better billing than I did.

CHILDREN'S THEATRE...For years in New York, I played only to audiences aged 13 and below who rattled their candy wrappers, screamed at each other, talked among themselves and yelled back at the actors . . . sort of like a bunch of pre-puberty matinee ladies.

NIGHTCLUBS...My latest venture was a club on Long Island known as Shapiro's by the Sea . . . a below-street-level nightspot where you take 10 steps down to enter . . . not only physically, but socially and professionally as well.

RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL...Recently, I worked as a production singer in this landmark movie house . . . It is 4 shows a day and 7 days a week until you lose all perspective of time. I still have surrealistic nightmares in which I wake up in the dressing room, rush out onto the stage late for my number and am kicked to death by the Rockettes.

INDUSTRIAL SHOWS...These are trade shows...extended commercials really, in which an entire musical comedy is geared around the selling of a product. The roles you are asked to play are, to put it mildly...eclectic. Just this year I did the lead in an industrial show for a surgical supply house in which I sang a parody called, "There Is Nothing Like A Cane" and an electrical appliance epic in which I played a toaster with inner turmoil

USO TOURS...Yes folks, despite the war being over, these groups still travel around entertaining wherever a dozen or more servicemen gather. Typical of the units sent out to cheer up "our boys" was the one in which I was a member. It consisted of me, an acne ridden accordionist, a toe-tapping blonde, who twirled first batons and a 53 year old belly dancer, best described as an obscene Jello mold.

COMMERCIALS...I have never done an on-camera commercial, but I did a voice-over this year. A voice-over means that you are heard on the commercial but not seen. It was for a new candy product, but I almost lost the job at a pre-interview with the sponsor when he gave me a piece of the candy and asked me to sum up its flavor with a one word description. "Cloying comes close," I replied honestly...learning that honesty is probably the single most uncalled for talent in commercials.

MODELLING...My modelling income this year will not exactly give Lauren Hutton reason for concern but I did do one job in which I modelled shows for a local discount chain. The photographer told me that my arch supports were the best ones he had ever seen in all his years in the business. Just my luck...my tootsies will make it before I do.

And finally...TELEVISION...My only tv appearance this year was a contestant on a game show which is a new way New York actors have found for earning extra cash. While I had hopes of walking away with at least $25,000, I answered one question wrong (Did you know that Ponce deLeon discovered the Fountain of Youth? I thought it was Luciana Pignatelli.) and came away with a Ken and Barby set and a case of Rice-a-Roni.
