AN AUDIENCE LINE
by Arnold M. Auerbach
The producer of A Chorus Line has a flair for the unexpected. Seeing the crowds at his box-office, he might well decide to imitate the format of the show and audition ticket-buyers. In which case we might see something like this:
(The lobby of the Shubert Theatre, jammed with would-be customers. Amidst fanfares, Joseph Papp appears.)
PAPP (brusquely): You and you and you. Line up and tell me why you want to see this show. The rest of you go home.
(The lucky applicants, a motley group, line up. The unhappy rejects leave.)
1ST APPLICANT (A brawny Texan...sings):
Pardner, I don't know the name o' yer play
And I don't care a hoot what them fool actors say.
Gimme six in the front row and damn the amount,
I'm here in Noo Yawk on an expense account.
(Capers about, brandishing money and scattering hundred-dollar bills on the floor)
PAPP (scornfully kicking aside the money): Don't call us, we'll call you. Next!
2ND APPLICANT (a dumb blonde...sings):
I like to eat candy in public
It relaxes me after my labors.
What's more, when I rustle the wrappings,
It does such nice things to my neighbors.
(Dances, chewing loudly on a nougat and accompanying herself with cellophane.)
PAPP: Go next door and bother my competitors. Next!
3RD APPLICANT (a confused old lady)
Isn't this - I'm here from Kokomo - The line for the Barbara Walters show? (Papp shoves her firmly toward NBC.)
4TH APPLICANT (an earnest graduate student...sings):
I've been studying Film since I was 14,
From the earliest Griffith to Stevie McQueen.
Rah-rah! I've just learned something new:
The theatre is an art form, too.
(He is picked. And so, if you're lucky, are you and you. Not you, you latecomer!)
