Neil Simon (left) has written The Play Goes On, a second memoir of his prolific playwriting life (the first was called Rewrites, which chronicled his early years in television, his first Broadway success and the tragic death of his first wife). The new memoir, written with a combination of the playwright's gifted sense of humor and his affecting reflections on the more painful aspects of life, follows his phenomenal career—with a galaxy of hits, some flops, Tonys and Pulitzers—and several marriages. The memoir concludes with current works in progress (Simon & Schuster, hardcover, $27).

Edward Albee: A Singular Journey by Mel Gussow is an incisive biography of the playwright (shown at right) by a man who has known him since the inception of Albee's career.
Gussow does a remarkable job of tracing the autobiographical elements in Albee's plays (the playwright was an adopted child and after years of troubled relations with his wealthy benefactors, finally made up with his mother, who was the central character in his third Pulitzer Prize play, Three Tall Women).
The years during which Albee was dismissed by critics and theatregoers—and his alcoholism—are treated with candor by Gussow. Albee's spectacular comeback with Three Tall Women makes for the biography's very heartening climax (Simon & Schuster, hardcover, $30).

Acting Up—A Diary by playwright David Hare (right) is an engrossing memoir of his switch from writing to acting in his highly acclaimed one-man play Via Dolorosa. Hare chose a most painful and risky project for his professional acting debut: a provocative monologue on the subject of Israel and Palestine, based on his recent experiences in Israel and the West Bank.
In addition to Via Dolorosa the author discusses his other plays and other playwrights' works, making the book a fascinating study of contemporary theatre on both sides of the Atlantic (Faber and Faber, an affiliate of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc., paperback, $14).
