State of North Carolina    Sept 15th 1865
Robeson County

Know ye all it may concern that I the said Henry B. Howell and Lewis a freed slave hath entered into agreement with each other.
I the said H.B. Howell of the first part, I promise to give Lewis $25.00 with his Turpentine added in, if his Turpentine does not meet $25.00 I will make up that amount in money I will give him one pair of common every day pants, one shirt if he will find the upper leather I will make him a pair of shoes, 3 bushels of corn, 2 bushels of potatoes on condition he will stay with me and work with me until the first day of Janry next, if he does loose any time I will pay him in proportion to that amount set forth above, given under my hand and seal the date first above written. Lewis a freed slave, of the second part, I the said Lewis as to myself, I am fully satisfied of the above Bargain and agreement with the said H. B. Howell, I will be obedient during the time I stay with the said H. B. Howell, given under my hand and seal this September 15th 1865
