Office Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands for Robeson Co
Lumberton N.C. Sept 29th 1865

This indenture made and entered into between Elias Mitchel a planter of Robeson, on the one part and Alfred Mitchel a freedman, for himself personally and his wife Martha and her siven children, of the other part, witnesseth that the said Elias Mitchel agrees covenants and binds himself by these presents to pay to the said Freedman for himself and family, for their labor on his plantation from the 27th day of last April till the 25th day of next December at the follow rates — fifteen bushels corn, his own little crop 7½ gals molasses, 4 hogs the usual rations of clothing and food and if sick to apply to the surgeon of the bureau for his sub Dist for said laborer's relief or that of his family. And the said laborer on his part agrees for himself and family to receive the above as full compensation for the work of himself and family for the year 1865  And he further agrees to render true and faithful service to the said Elias Mitchell, obeying all his lawful commands as he has been in the habit of doing when the said Afred was a slave. He also undertakes the responsibility of securing the same good conduct and obedience to the said Mitchel for his wife and siven children until the 25 of Dec next
