This indenture made this the 1st day of December AD One thousand eight hundred and sixty five between Angus Bethune of the State of North Carolina and County of Robeson of the one part and Betsy McLean a freed laborer of the County and State aforesaid of the second part - Witnesseth that the said Betsy McLean hath covenanted and agreed to and with the said Angus Bethune to labor (herself and son Handy) and do all kind of work on the farm on the otherwise from the 27th day of April ^[[1865]] until the 1st of January 1866 to work ten hours per day - to be respectful in their behavior and any loss of time either by illness or absence or otherwise to be deducted from her wages. The said Angus Bethune agreeing to furnish the said freed laborer and her son with comfortable quarters - one pair of shoes each for herself and her son Handy - their food - the production of a certain piece of ground allotted to her for the purpose of raising a crop for herself (the said piece of ground to receive the same cultivation as the said Angus Bethune's crop) and two weeks to labor for herself to procure clothing.
