This Indenture Made and entered into the 1st day of January 1866 between S.L. Hart of the County of Edgecombe and State of N.C of the first part and the undersigned freedmen and Women of the Second part. Witnesseth that the parties of the Second part have agreed to beComb laborers on the farm of S.L. Hart from the present date until the first of January 1867 and they do agree to all kinds of Labor common to the farms of the County to Obey all regulations necessary for the proper government of the farm to render the amount of Labor faithfully that is usual for their Capacity and to remain until the expiration of the Contract. And they futher agree that one half of the amount due as wages Shall be retained until the end of each year and if the Contract is violated that the amount due as wages at the times of such violation Shall be forfeited, A refusal to perform the proper amount of work unless in Case of Sickness Shall be Considered a violation of the Contract and the amount of Labor [[owed?]] Shall not be paid for, And the parties of 1st part agree in Compensation for such labor they will furnish the men with (4) four lbs of pork or its equivalent one (1) peck of meal per week and furnish the parties of the 2nd part with comfable quarters and will furnish the Women with three and half lbs (3 1/2) of pork and one peck meal per week and the Children over nine years old who Labor in the feild pork and meal in proper ratio [[@?]] Compound with adults And the amount of money per month in the respective years [[insertion]] names [[/insertion]] which Stand opposit their [[strikeout]]names[[/strikeout]] names
