Con Tract for Labour

This indenture made and entered into this 1st Day January (AD) 1866 Between Benjamin H Hale of the County Edgecomb State North carolina of the first part and the undersigned free labourers of the second part Witnesseth that the Said — Labours have agreed to work for the Said Hale From this date till the first day Januy 1867 to ^[[insertion]] do [[/insertion]] all kind labour common to the farms of the County to commence work usually early and work usually late to do their work faithfully and to be respectful in their deportment and they further agree that one half of their monthly pay shal be retained by the Said Hale till the end of the year and that the Amount so retained shal be forfeited by Violation of this Contract and they further agree that time lost by idleness sickness or other wise without leaf shal not be paid for and the Said Hale Has agreed that he will furnish the Said labourers with comfortable quarters sufficient rations and the amount of money pr month wich stands oposite their nams that he will treat them kindly and encorge the establishment of Schools for their Children—
