This indenture made & entered into this the 1st day of January 1866 between C W Knight & J F Knight of the county of Edgecombe & State of North Carolina of the first part, and the undersigned freed men & women of the second part, have agreed to become laborers on the Farm of C W Knight & of J F Knight from the 1st day of January 1866 to the 1st day of January 1867 and they do agree to do all kinds of labor common to the farms of the County to obey all the regulations necessary for the proper management of the farm, to render the amount of labor faithfully that is usual for their capacity and to remain until the expiration of the contract, and they further agree that one half the amount due as wages shall be retained from payment till the end of the year, and if the contract is violated that the amount due as wages at the time of such violation shall be forfeited. A refusal to perform the proper amount of labor unless in cases of sickness shall be considered a violation of the contract and the amount of labor so lost shall not be paid for, and the parties of the second part do further agree to lose all loss time from any cause, and not to absent themselves from work without the consent of the parties of the first part.

And the parties of the first part agree that in compensation for such labor they will furnish the parties with comfortable quarters, and will furnish the men with five pounds of pork or bacon & one peck of mealfor work. The women three pounds of pork or bacon & one peck of meal, and the children over nine years old who labor in the field pork and meal in proper ratio as compaired [[misspelled]]with the adults, and
