Contract for Labour

This indenture made and entered into on the 1st day of January A. D. 1866 between Henry E. Odom of the County of Edgecomb and State of North carolina of the first part and the undersigned free labors of the second part
 
Witnesseth that the said laborers have agreed to work for the said Odom from this date to the first day of January A. D. 1867. to do all kind of work or labor Common to the farms of said County to work usually early & late per day to do their work faithfully and to be respectful in their deportment and they further agree that one half of their monthly pay shal be retained by the said Odom till the end of the year, and that the Amt. so retained shal be forfeited by a violation of this Contract, and they agree that time lost by Idleness sickness or in any other way shal not be paid for, and the said Odom has agreed that he will furnish the said laborers with Comfortable Quarters and sufficient rations and the Amt. of Money per month which stands opposite their names that he will treat them kindly and encourage the establishment of schools for their Children, and Samuel Cooper & David Bellany further agrees that they will hall R Road timber cord wood or anything else that the said Odom may desire
