Wilmington N.C. January 1st 1866

This Agreement made this first day of January 1866 between James Petteway of Rock Hill Plantation New Hanover Co N.C. and William Davis, Daniel Faison, Jenny Davis Vichea Davis Jenny Quince, Henry Davis, Albert Davis and William Davis (small boy) Colored persons, at present residing in New Hanover Co N.C.

[[underlined]] Witnesseth [[/underlined]] that the said Petteway has commenced a farm on said plantation mentioned above and employed the aforesaid colored persons to work said farm on the following conditions vis; 1st The farm to be worked under the sole supervision and direction of the said Petteway - 2nd The said Petteway is to furnish the land to work the farm - 3rd The said colored persons are to find them-selves their own food and clothing and are allowed houses to live in and have the priviledge of raising fowls and vegetable gardens - 4th For the true and faithful performance in their part the said Petteway hereby agrees to give the said colored persons two thirds of such crops as may be made on said plantation during the present year - 5th Any extra expense over and above furnishing the land that the said Petteway may encur is to be deducted from the said two thirds proportion of the crop of said Colored people - 6th In case any of the said
