Why I said it I don't know.  I was not concious of having done so until I had repeated it some ten or twelve times.

I was the first to arrive at the Cushings.  I fussed around a little in the

dressing room and then went in.  Edith was sitting opposite the door, Mr Cushing in front of the fireplace, Mr Ronalds farthest off forming a triangle.  After shaking hands all around Mr Cushing said: "You are like the rest of your family, prompt."  "Yes," I said,"when Papa has anything to do with my getting off, I am always the first.  He stands in the hall with his watch in his hand."
