quite unexpectedly we all went in that evening to dance at Mrs Fred Vanderbilt's.  I had not been there very long before Mr Cottenet came up & asked me to dance.  After we had danced round we stood by the door of the piazza and he said "Do you know I have something to tell you" He looked very much interested

"What", I asked

"You know what we were talking about tonight at dinner?  The tall girl, well, I knew she is engaged."

"How do you know?", I asked excitedly

"I know she is engaged to the man whom we spoke of"
