To account for this fact I must tell you how my time has been passed lately. The person I have seen most of since the death of my cousin is Mr Sands. He has been more than ordinarily nice. I was going to dance with him the very night after Marguerite's death. I wrote him a note saying - Dear Mr Sands, My cousin Marguerite Shepard died this morning. Sincerely Yours etc That evening his card & the following note were brought to me - Dear Miss Vanderbilt - I am most sorry to hear of the sad death of your cousin. All I can offer you is my sincerest sympathy and that is a cold consolation, but if there is anything in my power that I can do for you, no matter how small I will feel most pleased
