to C. V. jr after Elsa left (he has had the measles as you remember) of course not expecting to see any one else. I had come down to my room really to dress for dinner at seven when the man came to my door and asked if I would see Mr. Laurence. I said yes much to Gladys's disgust. 

"But Sister," she exclaimed "you won't have time to dress, and its one of those old long stayers." "I will send him away in ten minutes," I said rehooking my dress and smoothing my hair. He was not dressed for visiting that I saw at a glance. He was standing in the middle of the room and came toward me as I

After we had said how do [[insert]] you [[/insert]] do, he said:

"Are you going away to-morrow, I nodded. "I only just heard so I came right up. Excuse the way I look [[strikethrough]] ed [[/strikethrough]]."

Of course, I said it did not matter and we talked a little but he always came back to the subject. "You are going away." He seemed to be really sorry, his manner was quite peculiar once or twice but I thought nothing of it. At quarter past seven I said:

"Now Mr. Laurence I must send you away.  I am dining down at Mrs. Cuttings at eight o'clock,
