Alice met Mr Morris coming back on the steamer last year.  His father was head of the Louisianna Lottery and some horse races, therefore Aunt Maggie would have nothing to do with him.  He proposed to Alice about Christmas time.  Alice told her mother, also saying she did not love him then.  Later she finds out she does love him and accepts him without telling her mother until after she has accepted him.  Aunt Maggie says

she must break it off immediately, she will not listen to it for a second etc etc.  This is just after Marguerite's death.  Alice thinks it over, decides to make the sacrifice and writes him breaking off the engagement.  He is not at all well.  His sister wrote to Alice saying if something is not done he cannot live.  Aunt Maggie is as firm as ever, will not listen to the matter or have anything to do with it.  At last Alice makes up her mind she will see him and finish
