at the Sloanes' the other night & the next day he came to see me for an hour and a half.

Mr Cottenet is coming this afternoon - He is going to play for me.

I must have a new book to begin the party in. I fear I will need one before that.

Jim was out in Church yesterday I think he must have gone to spend Sunday in the country with Harry. If so I am all the more anxious to see Mr Cottenet because he will have met him for the first time & I want to hear his impression. I doubt what it is altogether favorable. He is critical and then he thinks I like Jim which is sure to

prejudice Mr Cottenet against him. How strange life is. Mr Cottenet cares for me, even cares very much, for me, but then he knows it is absolutely impossible for me to care for him. Harry jokes him about it the whole time even when I am about. They call me Carmen and have all sorts of jokes that make us laugh. Henry is a brick. I am going to [[underlined]] make [[/underlined]] him care for me when we are off on the trip. [[underlined]] Make [[/underlined]] him by being indifferent and oh various other little tricks that I have learnt in my career. I have been pretty successful so far - and strange as it may seem it is not only my money!
